JOEY BISHOP the unoffical fansite
|
Joey Bishop was born Joseph Gottlieb on February 3,
1918 in the Bronx, NY to Jacob and Anna Gottlieb....He
was the youngest of 5 children....He got his beginnings
in the comedy business after he dropped out of high
school following his second year....He began his
career in vaudeville, working various jobs by day and
by night emceeing at clubs in NYC, South Philly,
Cleveland, and even in Miami at a club nicknamed "El
Dumpo"....He eventually joined up with Morris Spector
and a guy named Sammy Reisman to form the
comedy troupe "The Bishop Trio" (named for their
driver, who only agreed to chauffeur if they adopted
his surname as their stage monikers)....Married Sylvia
Ruzga in 1941....Always painfully down-to-earth, his
laughable cynicism and deadpan delivery earned him
accolades and an integral position as "Master of
Ceremonies" within the group known as the Rat
Pack....After appearing in numerous films and TV
programs including the acclaimed sitcom "The Joey
Bishop Show", he retired from show business...After his
wife, Sylvia, died in September 1999 of complications
due to lung cancer, he continued to reside in his
darling beachfront cottage in Newport Beach, CA until
he peacefully passed away aged 89 on October 17,
2007. Joey was never without his beloved feline and
canine companions, Angel, Amore, and Dizzy, nor his
caretaker and all-around superwoman, Nora. I owe a
world's worth of gratitude to both Joey and Nora for
their unique friendship and hospitality over the years--I
have felt so privileged to know you both.
